MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota women's track & field redshirt senior Temi Ogunrinde is representing Africa at the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic this weekend. The meet is set for Saturday and Sunday with Ogunrinde scheduled to compete in hammer throw on day one of competition.
A dual citizen of the United States and Nigeria, Ogunrinde earned a place on Africa's team for the four-continent competition while competing for Team Nigeria at the 2018 African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, this summer. She set a new Nigerian national record and placed second in the hammer throw with a throw of 67.39m (221-01), just two inches shy of her career-best throw (67.45m, 221-03).
The competition marked Ogunrinde's first meet representing Nigeria as she joined Queen Obisesan and Sofiat Omizi to make up Nigeria's hammer throwers as named by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for the 21st African Athletics Championships.
The IAAF Continental Cup is a four-continent competition between Africa, the Americas, Asia/Pacific, and Europe. The Americas team is composed of athletes from North America, Central America, Caribbean track & field federations, and South America. The Continental Cup title will be awarded to the continent with the highest collective point total of both men's and women's teams.
Ogunrinde's debut on the world stage follows an impressive 2018 collegiate season during which she repeated as the Big Ten Conference champion and earned Second Team All-America honors in hammer throw. She owns the Big Ten and Minnesota records in hammer throw at 67.45m (221-03) and returns to the Maroon & Gold for her final season of eligibility in 2018-19.
