Gophers Fall in Four to No. 18 Oregon

The No. 1 University of Minnesota volleyball program fell, 3-1, to No. 18 Oregon, tonight in Palo Alto, Calif. With the loss, the Golden Gophers dropped its first match of the season and now sit at 5-1. Oregon improved to 5-2 this year. All four sets were decided by two points as the two teams battled between 26 tie scores and 11 lead changes.
As a team, Minnesota had 63 kills to Oregon's 74, while it was outhit .295 to .298. The Gophers had 63 digs to Oregon's 65, but outblocked the Ducks, 10.5 to 8. Stephanie Samedy had a team-best 17 kills and hit .412, followed by Alexis Hart with 12 and Regan Pittman and Taylor Morgan with 11. CC McGraw had a team-best 17 digs. Samantha Seliger-Swenson 48 assists.
Minnesota plays No. 4 Stanford Sunday at noon.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Oregon took its largest lead of the first set as Minnesota held an attack error. The Ducks took a 12-8 lead off a kill as Minnesota called its first timeout of the match. Minnesota cut the lead to 16-14 off a Pittman kill, but Oregon pushed it back to a 19-14 lead as the Gophers called their second timeout. Following the timeout, Minnesota went on a 6-2 run to cut the Oregon lead to one at 21-20. The Ducks called a timeout to stop the run, its first. Minnesota tied the set at 22 and again at 23. Oregon stifled Minnesota's comeback attempt when it had a kill and a Gopher attack error.
Set 2: Minnesota opened the second set with a 10-5 lead as Oregon called its first timeout. Minnesota, however, continued to push the lead and took a 15-10 lead off a Hart kill. The Ducks responded and cut Minnesota's lead to 17-15 as the Gophers called a timeout. Samedy pushed the Gophers to a 19-17 lead and had a line shot at 21-18. The Ducks, however, cut Minnesota's lead to one at 22-21 off a block as the Gophers called a timeout. For the second straight set, the two teams were tied at 23-23, but Oregon pushed ahead and had back-to-back kills as the Ducks took the second, 25-23.

Minnesota responded out of that timeout and went on a 4-0 run and a 14-14 tie as Oregon called a timeout. The two teams traded points through 21-21. Rollins came out and added back-to-back kills and pushed the Gophers to a 23-21 lead as Oregon called a timeout. As Minnesota took a 24-21 lead, Oregon battled back and had back-to-back points for a one point lead. The Gophers used their last timeout, but Oregon had a block to tie it at 24. After an Oregon kill the Ducks were at match point, but they served it long as the two teams tied again at 25. Minnesota had a crucial block from Pittman and Hart to put it at set point, while an Oregon kill attempt went wide for a 27-25 Gopher set win.
