The University of Minnesota football team will once again join forces with the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund to help Tackle Cancer on Saturday, Sept. 8 when the Gophers host Fresno State at 6:30 p.m. at TCF Bank Stadium.
Saturday is Gopher football's annual tackle cancer game and volunteers will be collecting donations at each gate throughout the stadium with all money raised supporting the University of Minnesota cancer researchers. Fans can also visit RandyShaverCancerFund.org for more information or to make a donation.
The mission of the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund is to assist and support the cancer community in Minnesota by funding research, prevention, treatment and other programs relating to the cancer community's needs.
Shaver is well-known television anchor with KARE11. While his focus has always been on cancer research and the Minnesota cancer community, Shaver's fight became intensely personal when he himself became a patient shortly after his 1998 tournament. He was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin's Disease and beat it. However, Shaver's battle against cancer is personal once again. After 20 years of beating cancer, he announced in late August that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Shaver's personal journey has understandably made him even more passionate than ever about finding a cure.
Shaver's Tackle Cancer Fund initiative encompasses high school, college and professional football games.
