The Chicago Red Stars selected April Bockin as the fourth pick in the fourth round of the 2019 National Women's Soccer League Draft this past Thursday at the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Chicago, Ill.
Bockin was one of seven women drafted by the Red Stars in this year's draft. The University of Minnesota senior forward accompanies players from Loyola (Chicago), Northwestern, Santa Clara, Stanford and West Virginia in calling Chicago home. She joins a Red Stars team that finished fourth in the NWSL in 2018 with an overall record of 9-5-10 on the season.
The 2018 third team All-American honoree notched 26 goals, 27 assists and 79 points during her career at Minnesota. Nine of her 26 goals were game winners for the Gophers, and she went four-for-four when called upon to take a penalty kick. Her 27 career assists are the third-most in program history.
Bockin's leadership during the 2018 season saw the Gophers claim the title of Big Ten Tournament champions, largely thanks to her having scored all three Gopher goals during the tournament. Their performance in the conference tournament enabled Minnesota to make a run at the NCAA Tournament, in which they defeated Auburn 2-0 to claim the program's first postseason road win. Bockin notched an assist on the game-winning goal, allowing the Gophers to advance to the second round where the team eventually fell to No. 4 UCLA.
