Bowen Becker and Max McHugh were selected as the Big Ten Swimmer and Freshman of the week after their performances in the pool last Saturday at the Gophers dual meet against the University of Hawai'i. The University of Minnesota men's swim team totaled 158 points to Hawai'i's 104 at the dual.

Becker recorded a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 and 100 Freestyle events, touching the wall in 20.02 and 44.66 respectively. This week's award is the second Swimmer of the Week plaudit for Becker during the 2018-19 season. His last recognition came after he notched top times when the Gophers topped conference foe Iowa.

McHugh's event wins in the 100 Breaststroke (54.04) and the 200 Breaststroke (1:59.04) earned him his fifth Freshman of the Week title this year. Having already posted an NCAA A cut time in the 100 Breaststroke at the Hawkeye Invite earlier this season, McHugh will make an appearance at the NCAA Championships in Austin later this spring. His times still rank in the top ten in the nation for both events.

The Gophers will be back in action this Friday as they compete in a triple dual meet against USC and Oregon State in Los Angeles, Calif. Be sure to follow us on Twitter, Instagram and like us on Facebook to stay up to date with the team.
