The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team is hitting the road to begin the 2019 season as the Gophers face off against No. 20 Arizona State, No. 19 Missouri and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Â this Friday in Tempe, Ariz. The quad meet kicks off at 7:00 p.m. CT (6:00 p.m. MT) at Wells Fargo Arena. Follow along with the live stream here.
The Gophers are looking to start the season strong, competing against two ranked opponents in their opening meet. The team returns the 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Lexy Ramler who earned regular season All-American honors for her performance last season. Ramler and fellow Gopher Ona Loper were named Gymnasts to Watch in the Big Ten this season, and both gymnasts are expected to be vying for the top spot in the all-around competition.
Missouri enters this weekend's meet ranked at No. 19 in the WCGA Preseason Poll after taking fifth place at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional in 2018. The UIC Flames took third in the Midwest Independent Conference Championship last season and sent two individual gymnasts to NCAA Regionals.Â
The host team, Arizona State, comes into the 2019 season ranked at No. 20 in the WCGA Preseason Poll. Last season, the Sun Devils made an appearance at NCAA regionals for the first time since 2014. The team returns 2018 NCAA Nationals all-around qualifier Cairo Leonard-Baker who opens her sophomore season at this Friday's meet.
Ivy Lu is back on bars for the Gophers in 2019 as she looks to continue her strong performance in the event. She earned regular season first team All-American honors on the uneven bars in 2018 and recorded the highest ever score on bars in the history of Minnesota women's gymnastics with a 9.955 RQS. At the B1G Championships Lu became the first Gopher since 2002 to win a conference championship on bars scoring a 9.950.
This season's theme is once again "love the battle." The Gophers want fans to see the year-round work that goes into gymnastics to produce the results come competition time.
