D1Baseball named Gopher Baseball sophomore Max Meyer a Preseason First Team All-American, while choosing Minnesota sophomore Patrick Fredrickson to the Third Team, announced Monday.

The pair of Gophers now received Preseason All-America recognition from D1Baseball, Perfect Game, which named each a Second Team selection, and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, which named Fredrickson a Second Teamer and Meyer to its Third Team. Both Gophers were named Freshman All-Americans by five groups in 2018. D1Baseball, Collegiate Baseball, and ABCA/Rawlings also chose the pair as overall All-Americans.

Meyer, who will serve a utility role for Minnesota this season after spending most of his time on the mound last year, matched the Gopher program record with 16 saves in 26 appearances last season. He earning the title of Freshman Relief Pitcher of the Year from Collegiate Baseball after posting a 2-3 record and 2.06 ERA, striking out 54 batters compared to just 13 walks in his 43.2 innings last season. During his rookie season, the right-hander allowed opponents to bat just .163 against him and posted a 0.94 WHIP. His 16 saves also ranked third in all of NCAA Division I.

Fredrickson posted a 9-0 record and 1.86 ERA while striking out 73 batters in 97.0 innings during his rookie campaign that produced Big Ten Pitcher and Freshman of the Year honors for the right-hander.  He ranked 12th in the nation in ERA and in the top-50 nationally with a 1.01 WHIP and 6.59 hits allowed per nine innings on the way to being named the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year from Collegiate Baseball.

Minnesota will face off with eight players from teams on the 2019 schedule receiving Preseason All-America honors, including multiples from Oregon State and NC State. The Maroon & Gold is the only Big Ten team with multiple Preseason All-America honorees from D1Baseball across its First, Second, and Third Teams.
