Coming out of one of the toughest conferences in collegiate women's tennis, Florida native and Gophers' newcomer, Tiffany Huber sat down with Gopher Sports to talk about joining the Maroon and Gold, her former conference, and what sets Minnesota apart from the others.
GS: You are from Florida and started your collegiate tennis career at Louisville, what made Minnesota stand out when you began the transfer process?
TH: "When I started looking at schools to transfer to I knew I wanted a few things based on my previous two years of college tennis experience--the most important aspect for me was to find a great academic school that would enable me to fulfill my future career ambitions. Clearly, Minnesota checks that box. Second, I wanted to go to a school with a very dedicated coach with a disciplined yet respectful approach. When I first met Catrina, I knew she was that coach and I knew I would get along with her style and continue to work really hard for her. I was also very impressed by the camaraderie of the other girls and the positive and supportive culture of the team."
GS: While playing at Louisville you were competing out of the ACC. Have you noticed and changes between playing between a conference like the ACC and now transitioning to the Big Ten setting?
TH: "The ACC is a very tough conference, especially for women's tennis. Every school has a lot of really good players. We haven't gotten into the Big Ten season yet but I know it will be similarly challenging. I am really looking forward to it."
GS: We are very fortunate to have a facility like Baseline. What has it been like getting to play there, especially in an event like the Gopher Invitational to start off the Fall season?
TH: "The Baseline Tennis Center is amazing. I have traveled to many top name schools all over the country in the last two years and Baseline shines with the best of any of them-- the locker rooms and other facilities are top notch. The viewing area for fans, friends and parents is also awesome. I also like that we share the building with women's hockey--they are so impressive to watch in practice and in games!"
GS: You and Juliet Zhang are the newest members of the Gopher women's tennis roster. What has your experience been like getting to know the rest of the team?
TH: "This team is so awesome and I love being a part of it! My teammates are very supportive of each other and we all get along really, really well. The culture here is really different than other schools--it is a huge advantage and makes this a great place to play. I am sure Juliet feels the same way. Catrina works us all very hard and she is a great coach, but she always respects us as people and creates a great team culture and environment that I am very grateful for."
GS: What makes Minnesota so special?
TH: "My classes are really challenging, but I feel like I am learning a lot and will be very prepared for my life after college. At the same time, I really value my participation in the tennis program, the advice and example set by my coach, and the friendships and support I get from my teammates."
