Gophers Excel in Latest Graduation Success Rates

The University of Minnesota today announced that its student-athletes have posted a program-record 94 percent graduation rate, as measured by the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR). This mark was a one percent increase from last year's record best.
This year's GSR, focuses on the six-year cohort who came to the U as freshman in 2012. The 94 percent Minnesota GSR rate is the second-highest among Big Ten institutions, trailing only Northwestern at 98 percent.
The GSR shows the percentage of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within six years of starting school. It represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2009 and 2012. It excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.
"Our student-athletes continue to graduate at a very high rate," said JT Bruett, director of the Lindahl Academic Center. "We are very fortunate to have coaches and athletic administrators that reinforce the importance of a college degree for all our athletes."
The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates (FGR) in its report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave their initial school for any reason as non-graduates, even if they leave in good academic standing or subsequently graduate from another institution. For 2012-13, Gopher Athletics had a 78 percent grad rate using this measure. In the four-class average from 2009-2012, Minnesota also ranked second in the Big Ten at 81 percent. Northwestern also took the top spot at 91 percent.
Six Gopher women's programs held a perfect 100 percent in the latest Graduation Success Rates report: basketball, golf, gymnastics, hockey, soccer and tennis.
Seven Gopher men's programs achieved Graduation Success Rates of 90 percent or higher, led by gymnastics and tennis, achieving 100 percent rates.
