Gopher Spotlight: Alexis Hart

This season marks a lot of 'lasts' for senior Alexis Hart. Not only is she in her final season with the Gopher Volleyball team, but she's also in her final semester at the University of Minnesota.

Hart will graduate in December with a degree in Business Marketing Education. She was able to walk last May in a commencement ceremony. This was a big deal to both Hart and the rest of her family, as Hart is the first grandchild to graduate from college in her family.

"Just the fact that none of my other siblings or cousins have experienced it and that they got to watch me walk across the stage was cool. It also inspired my sister because she'll be a freshman in college next year. She doesn't know where she wants to go yet, but she was like 'if you can do it, I can do it'."

Hart describes graduating as a blessing. She had 10 to 11 family members at the ceremony, and they're all super proud of what Hart was able to accomplish.

The outside hitter has had a lot of great memories to look back on and a lot of other opportunities to look forward to, both as a student and as an athlete at Minnesota.

Academically, Hart had the opportunity to study abroad in England for three weeks. She was able to take a class where she learned a lot about English culture. It gave Hart a taste of Europe, which will benefit her after her time at Minnesota comes to a close.

"It was a really cool experience, especially because I want to play overseas after I'm done here."

Hart would like to play professionally for as long as her mind and body wants to play, and then later get a job in business.

"I'm kind of excited for the next chapter in my life."

After she leaves Minnesota, Hart says that she'll take away all of the memories she made over the past four years. Not just with playing volleyball, but also the fun times she's had on road trips or hanging out with her roommate.

Now in her final season, Hart has taken on a new role with the team. Having three years of Gopher volleyball experience, she has become a leader for people on the team.

"I'd say the biggest change will be having a voice. Not that I didn't have a voice my freshman year, but just the fact that the freshman and the underclassmen can look up to me."

For her senior year, Hart hopes to be the best player that she can be. Minnesota has helped her to become faster, stronger and an overall better athlete. As a team, she's hoping for consistency on the court.

"Individually, just being the best version of myself that I can be because I know that it's my last year so I want to give it all I can. As a team, just as any goals we've had, to be consistent."
