Gophers Season Ends In Illinois
10/27/2019 3:22:00 PM | Soccer
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Minnesota soccer program's 2019 season came to a close on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to the University of Illinois.
After falling behind early, Minnesota notched the equalizer late in the first half when Haley Hartkemeyer delivered a beautiful cross into Sadie Harper for the stunning finish. Not quite a bicycle kick, Harper had her back to the goal but managed to slot the ball into the top of the net to bring the Gophers level.
The goal was the second of Harper's career after the Minnesota native previously scored against Arkansas on August 29. The assist from Haley Hartkemeyer is the second of both the season and her career after transferring from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The Gophers senior class finishes their career with 42 wins to go along with a trio of Big Ten titles from 2016 (Regular season and tournament) and 2018 (Tournament).
Illinois opened up the scoring when they scored when Kelly Maday slid the ball under goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen on their first shot of the game.
The Illini regained the lead in the 47th minute when they converted a penalty kick earned after a Paige Elliott foul in the box. They proceeded to score twice more in the 58th and 83rd minutes to secure the victory.
Despite allowing the four goals, Maddie Nielsen made six saves to bring her season total up to 74. The Washington native will enter her senior season with over 150 career saves.
