Being a student athlete requires a lot of passion and drive, which are two qualities that Regan Pittman is overflowing with. However, her passion and drive extends to more than just volleyball.

The Spring Hill, Kan., native has found an additional calling through her major, recreation administration.

"I chose it because I just kind of fell in love with the people and what they do for life," said Pittman. "They go to work loving their job every day."

Pittman is able to see this first hand through her job with Three Rivers Park District.

"I work as an outdoor educator and I teach everyone of all abilities underneath the sun to love doing stuff outside," said Pittman.

The supervisor of the program at Three Rivers Park District taught the first recreation class that Pittman ever took. Pittman loved the class and her professor got her the job at Three Rivers Park District for the summer. Now having worked there for the past two summers, Pittman loves the people and what they're all about.

Pittman said that finding a passion outside of volleyball has been incredibly beneficial for her.

"I think it really has helped me become a well-rounded person as well as an athlete," said Pittman.

Though working as an outdoor educator and being a member of the Gopher volleyball team may seem like completely separate entities, they have meshed together in order to make her a better educator and player.

"Three Rivers has helped me a lot with who I am as a leader and becoming that leader and really shaping who I am," said Pittman. "Volleyball has helped me in the work field of working with people and understanding that everyone is different and thinks differently."

The middle blocker says that both working for Three Rivers Park District and playing volleyball have had an immense impact on her life.

"Volleyball has given me opportunities that not everyone has had and I'm very blessed for that and very thankful," said Pittman.

One of the ways in which volleyball has impacted her life, especially at the University of Minnesota, is by preparing her for life beyond college.

"Hugh and the coaching staff teach us way more than just volleyball," said Pittman. "They teach us about life and how to handle budgets and finances and all sorts of real life situations."

Being a red shirt junior, Pittman will graduate this fall. With one more year of eligibility left for volleyball, Pittman will go on to get her masters.

After Pittman is done with school, she is not exactly certain what she'll do next. Whether it be playing volleyball professionally or getting a full-time job, she's excited to see where life takes her.

When it comes to her future career path, Pittman has her job at Three Rivers Park District to thank for helping her figure it out. It showed her what she wanted to do for a job and the type of people she wanted to surround herself with.

"I'm really open to options and will hopefully apply to some really good jobs that fit what I want to do and impact some youth," said Pittman.
