Part of Minnesota's Military Appreciation Game will feature a unique helmet sticker recognizing the Armory on campus
The University of Minnesota football team will honor the military on Saturday with its annual Military Appreciation Day when the No. 13 Gophers host No. 5 Penn State at 11 a.m. at TCF Bank Stadium.
Active military, veterans and their family members will be attending the game. Veterans will also be assisting the University of Minnesota ROTC raising the American flag prior to the national anthem and participating in the coin toss prior to kickoff. During the game, all military in attendance will be asked to stand and be recognized.
In addition, the football team will wear a special decal on the back of their helmets that recognizes the Armory on campus.
The Armory was built in 1896 to hold military training and athletic instruction. During WWII, the building was devoted to training Air Force cadets and continued to be the campus center for Army, Navy and Air Force instruction until the end of the 20th century. The building also has plaques on it with the names of Minnesota students who fought and died in the Spanish-American War in 1898, all of whom trained at the Armory. The Armory is the current home of the local ROTC where Minnesota students train to be future military leaders.
The Armory also has connections to the athletic department. The building hosted basketball games in the 1900s and the original Little Brown Jug was left in the locker room at the Armory in 1903, creating a rivalry trophy game with Michigan that has lasted more than a century.
The helmet decal recreates the crest that is located on the front of the Armory and is a way to help recognize the sacrifices of former Minnesota students.
