Win Streak at Eight as Gophers Grab Road Win at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Minnesota's win streak sits at eight games, tied for the seventh longest in program history, after the team (8-1) closed out its three-game road trip with an 83-50 win at George Washington (6-4) Tuesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The Golden Gophers scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed in the first ever meeting between the schools. Minnesota shot exactly 50 percent from the floor (31-of-62) and 52.0 percent on 3-pointers as their 13 makes from long range tied for the 10th most made in program history.
Defensively, the 50 points scored by the Colonials was a season low for a Minnesota opponents, and Minnesota scored 33 points off of 23 GW turnovers.
Minnesota, which led by as many as 38 points, had two players in double figures, including a career-high 23 points from freshman Sara Scalia. The Stillwater, Minn., native set career highs in field goals made and attempted (9-of-13) and blocks (2), while also tying career highs in 3-pointers made and attempted (4-of-6), rebounds (7) and steals (4).
Junior Destiny Pitts made six 3-pointers to finish with 20 points, her 20th career game with at least that many. She also tied a career high with seven assists. Also reaching double figures was redshirt junior Gadiva Hubbard, who finished with 10 points and tied a career high with five steals.
Other notable performances included senior Taiye Bello who saw her four-game streak of double-doubles end, though she still had nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. Freshman Jasmine Powell filled the stat sheet with seven points, six assists and three steals, while fellow freshman Klarke Sconiers had a career-high seven points.
The game opened with Bello making a layup and Scalia hitting a pair of 3-pointers to put the Gophers up 8-0. They outscored George Washington 23-13 in the opening quarter, but really put the game away in the second quarter.
Minnesota blitzed the Colonials to the tune of 26-9 in the second quarter, tying for the fewest points allowed in a quarter this season. The Gophers' 49-22 lead at halftime not only marked the team's most points in an opening half this year, but also the biggest halftime lead of the season.
After three games away from home, Minnesota returns to Williams Arena this Sunday to play UC Davis at 1 p.m. on BTN Plus. Prior to tipoff, former Gopher Janel McCarville will have her banner raised to the Williams Arena rafters.
