In honor of Black History Month, Gopher Athletics is celebrating those who made us great. Throughout February, GopherSports.com will share short interviews with African-American alumni from various Gopher programs. In these interviews, former student-athletes reflect on their time at the U of M, provide advice to current Gophers and share what Black History Month means to them personally.

What is it you miss most about the University?
The bridge walk from Coffman Union to the West Bank is what I miss most. I thought it was the most scenic route on campus. I used to stop at Coffman every Tuesday and pick up a bagel and a smoothie and would head to class; I felt like a real adult and recalled that being one of those moments I realized that college and being "on the go" was a real thing.
If you could give the current student-athletes any piece of advice, what would it be?
My greatest piece of advice for current athletes is to do what you say you will. Following through is soft skill that we often make tougher than it needs to be. Know yourself and start out small if you need to. Communicate, map out your method and push for it.
What was your favorite university or athletic event you've attended since you graduated and what made it so special to you?
The African American Student Athlete Reunion 2015 was my favorite event that I've attended since graduating. I felt it was great to still have an event that encouraged me to revisit and cultivate the relationships that had helped shape me the most throughout my college experience. Plus the food is always off the chain. The end.
What are you grateful for?
I am always grateful for my family and comfortable, stress-free weather.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month (BHM) to me has always been a time to acknowledge and celebrate ALL of our accomplishments just in case anyone else forgot or didn't know. I believe that the emphasis placed on BHM is what continues to inspire me to reach greater heights.
What occupies your time now?
I am taking time to develop my craft in painting abstract canvases and writing. I spend time volunteering with programs that directly aim to develop our youth. I am also a mentor for a pre-teen in the Houston area.
