In honor of Black History Month, Gopher Athletics is celebrating those who made us great. Throughout February, GopherSports.com will share short interviews with African-American alumni from various Gopher programs. In these interviews, former student-athletes reflect on their time at the U of M, provide advice to current Gophers and share what Black History Month means to them personally.

What is it you miss most about the University?
I miss being around friends, going to events, and living in Minneapolis. I have a lot of great (and bad) memories at the University of Minnesota that have shaped who I am today. I am very grateful for my experiences and proud of the person I am becoming because of so.

If you could give the current student-athletes any piece of advice, what would it be?
This is a great time to do a lot of self-exploration. Get to know yourself; practice self-awareness and actively engage in self-improvement.

Step out of your comfort zone. Engage in conversations with people you've never spoken to before, go to events you've never heard of, try a new food—anything! Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. :)

Before you know it, you'll be graduated-- spend your time living in the moment and enjoying those around you.

What was your favorite university or athletic event you've attended since you graduated and what made it so special to you?
Attending the Gopher football game against Purdue. It was great being back in the stadium; it was pure nostalgia.

What are you grateful for?
I am grateful for the adversities I have endured, the people that took a chance on me, and the opportunities I have been granted.

What does Black History Month mean to you?
Celebrating and remembering creative, courageous and significant events and individuals from our culture.

What occupies your time now?
Writing research papers, applying for jobs, listening to podcasts, and hanging out with friends and family.
