Murphy Earns Spot on Karl Malone Top 10 List
2/7/2019 12:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Senior forward Jordan Murphy was selected as one of the top 10 finalists for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday.
Murphy is among the nation's leaders in rebounds and double-doubles. He is tops in the Big Ten and ranks fourth in the nation pulling down 12.1 rebounds per game. Murphy has produced 16 double-doubles this season, as he is second on the team averaging 14.9 points per game. Earlier this season he became the school record holder for career double-doubles and rebounds, and has moved into second place on the all-time Big Ten rebounding list. Among the Gophers, the San Antonio native also ranks second in blocks (23) and fourth in assists (62) and steals (17). He has started every game this year.
Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its fifth year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprising top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.
