Tyler Johnson is one of two Gopher receivers ever to have two separate games with three touchdown receptions
It's spring break on the University of Minnesota campus, so we are going to use these five days as a Tyler Johnson appreciation week as part of our Ski-U-Number series.
Tyler Johnson is one of two Gophers ever to have two separate games of three receiving touchdowns. Johnson caught three touchdowns against Michigan State in 2017 and three against Miami (Ohio) in 2018.
Johnson's three touchdowns against Michigan State all came in the fourth quarter, making him the first Gopher to catch three touchdowns in one quarter since 2006 when Logan Payne caught three (had four in the game) in the first quarter against Temple. Johnson also became first Gopher to catch three touchdowns in one quarter in a Big Ten game since Omar Douglas (father of receiver Demetrius Douglas) did so in the third quarter against Purdue in 1993 (Douglas caught a school record five touchdowns in that game).
The other Gopher to have two separate games of three receiving touchdowns is Da'Jon McKnight. The former Minnesota standout accomplished that feat in 2010 against Penn State and 2011 at Michigan State.
