Gophers Open Stanford Invitational

The Golden Gophers competed on day one of the Stanford Invitational on Friday.

STANFORD, Calif. – The Golden Gopher track & field team is competing on day one of this weekend's Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track & Angell Field on Friday.
 
Men's Day One Highlights
 
Elliott Davis led the way for the Maroon & Gold with his second men's outdoor 400 meter crown in his second outdoor meet of the season. The Gophers newcomer paced the 37-man field with a time of 46.81 – a time that pushed Davis into 10th all-time on Minnesota's top performers list. Ben Psicihulis added a fourth-place finish behind a new personal record of 47.09.

Davis was one of two top-10 all-time showings on Friday for Minnesota as Alec Basten finished second in his men's 3,000 meter steeplechase section with a time of 8:45.21. The performance stands as the eighth fastest steeplechase time in Maroon & Gold history. Jack Manderscheid finished third in his section at 8:56.19 – also a personal record. 

Seth Eliason also finished second in his men's 1,500 meter section at 3:54.48 while Jordan MacIntosh was sixth at 3:55.15. Dawson LaRance finished seventh in his section but with a faster time at 3:53.55. 

Kaleb Siekmeier started the day with a new personal record in the men's collegiate hammer throw – finishing third at 56.16 meters (184-03 ft.) before adding a second personal record and second third-place finish in the men's collegiate discus at 54.38 meters (178-05 ft.). Mason Roomes also added a third-place finish in the men's invitational long jump at 7.24 meters (23-09.00 ft.) while Sammie Houston tied for fifth in the men's collegiate long jump at 6.76 meters (22-02.25 ft.). The Gophers closed out the night with another third-place finish from Owen Hoeft in his men's 5,000 meter section at 14:05.91.

Collin Sieffert added a personal record of 53.05 to finish eighth in the men's 400-meter hurdles while Jonathan Tharaldsen also finished eighth in the men's invitational discus at 51.68 meters (169-07 ft.). 
 
Women's Day One Highlights
 
Four Gophers earned top-three finishes to lead the Gopher women in early action on day one at the Stanford Invitational led by Tess Keyzers, who won the invite section of shot put with a career-best throw of 16.52m (54-02.50). Keyzers' mark is good for second in Gophers' history in just her second outdoor meet of her career. Kiley Sabin finished as runner-up with a season-opening throw of 16.41m (53-10.25) as well.
 
On the track, Amira Young led the way Friday afternoon with a runner-up showing in the 100m dash in 11.63 seconds, making her outdoor debut in the event ranked sixth among all-time Gophers.
 
Rounding out the women's top-three showings was Temi Ogunrinde with a third-place finish in the hammer throw invite. Ogunrinde recorded a season-best throw of 63.10m (207-00) while Kaitlyn Long threw 52.34m (171-09) for eighth place in the event.
 
The Gopher women broke a pair of program records in Friday's evening session on the track. Bethany Hasz improved on her own Minnesota program record in the 5,000m with a career-best time of 15:45.72. She placed eighth overall in the invite section of the race as the sixth collegiate runner. Meanwhile, Megan Hasz followed up with her own Gophers' program record performance, posting a time of 33:09.57 for 26th place overall in the invite section of the 10,000m and improving on Laura Docherty's previous record time of 33:24.93. Patty O'Brien also posted an all-time top-10 mark for the Gophers in the 10,000m, clocking a PR of 34:24.40 to move into 10th in Minnesota history.

Other highlights for the women in the field events saw Hannah Morris jump 5.85m (19-02.50) for fourth place in the long jump invite and  Lexi Kiefer place fifth in the invite section of pole vault by clearing a season-best 3.93m (12-10.75). Ryan Crotty used a career-best mark of 46.20m (151-07) to place sixth in the invite section of javelin as well.
 
Rachel Schow placed eighth in both the 100m hurdles (season-best 13.97 seconds) and 400m hurdles (1:02.09).
 
Competition at the Stanford Invitational continues on Saturday with women's hammer throw kicking things off as the first collegiate event of the day at 12 p.m. CT. FloTrack is providing live coverage of the meet.
