Records Fall in Twos for Haszs

For Megan Hasz and Bethany Hasz, breaking records is more fun two at a time.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Indoors it was the 3,000m and 5,000m program records at the Iowa State Classic, and outdoors last weekend, it was the 5,000m and the 10,000m program records. University of Minnesota redshirt sophomores Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz have shown that breaking records is more fun in twos this season.
"Going into this season, even being only sophomores on the track, they had already basically rewritten our track recordbooks," Gophers distance coach Sarah Hopkins said. "I think last year was a big step for them, getting into some different events on the track with the 3K, 5K, and 10K and recording PRs across the board. That's been an interesting change from the high school level to the college level, really taking some of those new events and running with them."
The Haszs made their official college debuts in uniform for the Gophers during the 2018 season and nearly immediately solidified their places among Minnesota's all-time best distance runners. This season, at the 2019 Iowa State Classic, they improved their ranks with a pair of record-breaking performances. Megan placed third in the 5,000m, recording a career-best time of 15:51.55 and improving on the previous indoor program record of 15:59.23 held by Megan Duwell since 2010 by nearly eight seconds. Meanwhile, Bethany improved on her own Gophers' record in the 3,000m with a time of 9:11.46 to place fourth at the meet.
In their first races of the outdoor season, the Haszs picked up right where they left off indoors.
Bethany toed the line in the 5,000m invite section at the Stanford Invitational last Friday already holding the Gophers' outdoor program record in the event at 15:59.46, and she lowered her record time to 15:45.72, cutting nearly 14 seconds off her previous career-best time and placing sixth among the collegiate runners at the meet.
With only a men's 5,000m race between their two races, it was not long before Megan took her turn to put the hammer down on Minnesota's recordbook.
Megan lined up among a stacked field in the 10,000m at Stanford's Cobb Track at 9:07 p.m., notably 11:07 p.m. back home in Minnesota, and followed her sister's impressive race with her own Gophers' program record performance. Megan recorded a career-best 10K time of 33:09.57, improving on the previous Minnesota record time of 33:24.93 held by Laura Docherty since 2013.
Back-to-back program records set by sisters sounds astonishing, but the Haszs have actually traded first-place finishes and PRs throughout their careers, often running the same races and finishing just seconds apart.
During Minnesota's 2018 outdoor campaign, the Haszs ran the two fastest 5,000m times in Minnesota history at the Mt. SAC Relays as they both broke the previous outdoor program record of 16:04.55 held by Megan Duwell since 2010. Bethany ran 15:59.46 for 17th place with Megan on her heels in 16:00.22 for 18th place, and they moved into first and second among all-time Gophers. The sisters both posted scoring finishes in the 5,000m to clinch Minnesota's outdoor Big Ten title last spring as well.
The 2019 cross country season was no different, where Bethany became just the third Gopher in program history to win the individual crown at the Roy Griak Invitational. The runner-up in the race? None other than Bethany's sister Megan.
This track season, however, the sisters are taking down records on their own.
"Last year was the first time in their lives they've trained separately," Hopkins said. "Obviously they still merge together in certain workouts and certain races, but Megan goes a little bit longer into the 10K world and Bethany stays a little more speed-sided with the mile. I think it helps both of them in different ways by playing into their strengths. We have been able to tailor their approaches to what they each do best. Obviously, they have a lot of similar strengths, but there are some differences in how they are physically and what they like to do on the track."
Whether they're racing stride for stride in the same heat, or one is doubling the other's distance, the Haszs are certain to leave their marks on the Minnesota recordbooks.
