Gophers Kick Off Competition at Drake Relays

Members of the Gophers distance squad competed at the Drake Relays on Thursday evening.

DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Minnesota track & field program opened action at the 2019 Drake Relays on Thursday night with a pair of runner-up finishes for the Maroon & Gold in front of a record crowd of 8,756 fans.

Men's Recap
The Gophers closed out the night with a number of big performances in the men's 5,000 meters including three personal records and three top-10 finishes for the Maroon & Gold. 

Alec Basten finished second overall and first among collegiate runners while Owen Hoeft was right behind his teammate in third overall. Basten's time of 13:53.30 now stands eighth all-time at the University of Minnesota while Hoeft again came in right behind his fellow Gopher at 13:54.26 – good enough for ninth all-time in program history. Jack Manderscheid added a third personal record for Minnesota at 14:11.80 to finish eighth overall. 

Meanwhile, Jordan MacIntosh also a ran a new personal record of 3:49.07 to finish third in the men's unseeded 1,500 meters while unattached competitor Shane Streich finished 10th at 3:54.56. 

Additionally, unattached competitor Teddy Frid claimed the men's decathlon title at the Drake Relays, setting a new personal record of 7,478 in the winning effort. Frid finished third or better in all 10 events and led the field in five of the disciplines (long jump, high jump, 110-meter hurldes, discus and pole vault). 

Women's Recap
Six Gophers earned top-10 finishes to lead the Maroon & Gold women on Thursday evening at the Drake Relays.

Jaycie Thomsen and Maria Eastman made their 10,000-meter debuts for the Gophers and Thomsen finished as runner-up in 35:21.92. Eastman also posted a top-four finish, taking fourth in 35:36.70.

Lindsey Greenlund led five Gophers in the unseeded section of the 1,500-meter run, posting a career-best time of 4:31.06 for third place. Patty O'Brien (4:31.35) and Elyse Prescott (4:31.63) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, with personal-best times as well, and Sophie Schmitz took fourth in the unseeded section of the 800-meter run in 2:10.61.

Bolstorff Twilight Recap 
The Maroon & Gold added four event titles at Macalester's Bolstorff Twilight on Thursday night in St. Paul. 

For the second time in five days, Kaleb Siekmeier recorded a personal record and a win in the men's discus at 55.23 meters (181-02 ft.) while James Travis also picked up a personal record to win the men's triple jump at 14.66 meters (48-01.25 ft.). Seth Eliason added a win in the men's 800 meters at 1:56.30. 

Jon Nerdal closed out the meet with a win in the men's hammer throw, setting a new Macalester Stadium record an improving on his own personal record at 65.78 meters (215-10 ft.). Nerdal remains sixth all-time at Minnesota in the event. The Gophers carried three of the top four finishers in the event with Kieran McKeag finishing second and Connor Rousemiller coming in fourth. 

Up Next
Action continues at the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday, and a group of Gophers is also set to compete locally at the Janis Rider Invitational hosted by Macalester College on Saturday.
