Green Named Male Breakthrough Athlete

For the second straight year, a football player claims one of the top honors at the Golden Goldys
University of Minnesota football player Seth Green was named Male Breakthrough Athlete at the 2019 Golden Goldys. The annual showcase event was held on Monday, April 29 at TCF Bank Stadium.
Joining Green as nominees in the category were Evan Ferlic (cross country), Brannon McManus (hockey), Mitch McKee (wrestling) and Jonathan Tharaldsen (track & field).
Green burst onto the scene in 2018 after redshirting in 2016 (he was named Minnesota's Offensive Work Team Player of the Year) and playing in only one game in 2017. Green moved from quarterback to tight end to wide receiver in the offseason prior to the 2018 season and helped the Gophers in a magnitude of ways during the season.
He was primarily utilized as a wildcat quarterback and receiver last season. The 6-4, 240-pound Green rushed 76 times for 282 yards (had only one negative rush all season) and eight touchdowns last season. He also displayed a deft passing touch, as he completed 4-of-5 passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed a successful 2-point conversion pass and caught two passed for 37 yards last season.
Green is the second consecutive member of the football team to be name Male Breakthrough Athlete. Tyler Johnson, who was a nominee this year for Male Athlete of the Year, received the 2018 breakthrough honor after catching 35 passes for 677 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore. Johnson posted those numbers after totaling only 14 catches as a freshman.
