5/21/2019 3:04:00 PM | Softball
With the Gophers in a Regional Championship game, freshman Natalie DenHartog stepped to the plate in the first inning and provided an early 3-0 cushion with a smash to right center. Moments like that one have helped her notch Schutt Sports/NFCA Freshman of the Year Top-3 finalist honors.
The Freshman of the Year winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 28 at the WCWS banquet. DenHartog is just the second Gopher to ever earn Top-3 finalist honors.
The Hopkins, Minn. native is batting .384 with 16 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs this season. She leads the team with 62 RBIs, 134 total bases and a .817 slugging percentage this season.
DenHartog was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times this season. She earned unanimous All-Big Ten First Team and All-Freshman Team honors as well. She also notched First Team All-Region honors. She has spent the majority of her time in left field this year but more recently has been starting as the Gophers DP.
The Freshman slugger and the Gophers are set to host their first ever Super Regional this weekend when LSU comes to town. They will play Friday at 4 p.m. on ESPN2, Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN 2 and the if needed game on Sunday would be at 3 p.m. on ESPN.
