5/24/2019 9:37:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

Amira Young, Rachel Schow, Obsa Ali, and Alec Basten advanced to the NCAA Championship on day two of the NCAA West Preliminary.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --  Amira Young, Rachel Schow, Obsa Ali, and Alec Basten advanced to the NCAA Championship to lead the Golden Gopher track & field team on day two of the NCAA West Preliminary.

Entering the final day of competition on Saturday, seven Maroon & Gold competitors have punched their tickets to next month's national championships in Austin, Texas.

Women's Highlights

Young and Schow both used career-best times in their respective events to lead the Gopher women with NCAA Championship berths on day two at the NCAA West Prelim.

Young advanced to the NCAA national meet in the 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 11.37 seconds, tying Minnesota's program record held by Tahesia Harrigan since 2002 and placing 11th at the West Preliminary. She also placed 29th in the first round of the 200-meter dash in 23.86 seconds.

Meanwhile, Schow also punched her ticket to the NCAA Championship and moved up Minnesota's all-time list in the 400-meter hurdles. Schow ran a career-best time of 57.47 seconds, good for second among all-time Gophers, to place 12th at the NCAA West Prelim and extend her season.

Two Gophers made their NCAA West Preliminary debuts in the 3,000-meter steeplechase led by Abby Kohut-Jackson, who moved into seventh among all-time Gophers with a career-best time of 10:15.14 and finished 25th at the meet. Lindsey Greenlund also made her NCAA debut with a 35th-place showing in 10:25.43.

Day two at the West Prelim also saw Kiley Sabin use a throw of 49.29 meters (161-08 ft.) to finish 30th in the discus while Lexi Kiefer tied for 38th in pole vault by clearing 3.92 meters (12-10.25 ft.).

Men's Highlights

Ali and Basten posted the top-two finishes in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase to close out the second day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary for the Maroon & Gold.

After successfully defending his Big Ten title in the discipline earlier this month, Ali repeated the repeat on Saturday with his second-straight win in the steeplechase at the NCAA West Preliminary and will now look to defend his NCAA title next month in Texas. Ali led the field with a winning time of 8:34.16 while Basten punched his first ticket to the national championships with a personal record of 8:34.50 -- a mark that jumps him up to second all-time at the University of Minnesota in the steeplechase behind Ali's school record from last year's NCAA title win.

Meanwhile, Jack Manderscheid added a personal record of 8:54.09 to finish 21st while Nick Rink ran 9:11.08 to place 36th.

Additionally, Kaleb Siekmeier finished 25th in the men's discus as the redshirt freshman debuted at the NCAA West Preliminary with a toss of 53.62 meters (175-11 ft.). Jonathan Tharaldsen also competed in the event for the Gophers before representing the Maroon & Gold in Saturday's men's shot put competition.
