Gophers to Visit Butler in Gavitt Tipoff Games

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team will travel to Indianapolis for the Gavitt Tipoff Games this fall, facing the Butler Bulldogs on Tuesday, November 12 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Game time and television broadcast information will be announced at a later date, with either Fox Sports 1 or Big Ten Network carrying the game live.
This will be the Gophers' third appearance in the Gavitt Games, which features eight matchups between the Big Ten and BIG EAST Conferences. The series, which started in 2015, is named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, the founder of the BIG EAST.
Minnesota and Butler will meet for the fourth time, with the Maroon and Gold holding a 3-0 advantage in the series. They have met once at Hinkle, a 70-68 triple-overtime Gophers win on December 22, 1973. Their last meeting came in 2009, an 82-73 Minnesota victory at the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
Butler is coming off its fifth straight postseason appearance, falling to Nebraska in the National Invitation Tournament. The Bulldogs will return four starters from last year's squad which finished 16-17, including rising senior All-BIG EAST second teamer Kamar Baldwin, the team's leading scorer in 2018-19.
The Gophers are 2-0 in the Gavitt Tipoff Games thus far, defeating St. John's, 92-86, at Williams Arena on Nov. 18, 2016 and topping Providence, 86-74, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence on Nov. 13, 2017.
Scheduled through 2022, the Gavitt Tipoff Games will be played on consecutive days in the first full week of the college basketball season. Each BIG EAST team will participate a minimum of six times, while Big Ten programs will take part a minimum of four times. Teams from both conferences already meet in some traditional rivalry games, and those matchups will continue in the upcoming seasons.
Minnesota's full non-conference schedule will be announced later this summer.
