Champagnie Wins Jamaican Javelin Title

Ayesha Champagnie won the javelin national title to lead a group of current, former, and future Gophers competing at the 2019 JAAA National Senior Championships.
KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Ayesha Champagnie won the javelin national title to lead a group of current, former, and future Gophers competing at the 2019 JAAA National Senior Championships at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, this weekend.
After competing unattached during the 2019 collegiate season, Champagnie recorded a throw of 49.19m, just shy of her career-best mark of 49.53m set during the 2018 season, to win the Jamaican title in javelin. Champagnie also placed eighth in long jump (5.48m) and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.33 seconds at the meet.
Nayoka Clunis also secured two top-three finishes after competing unattached during the 2019 season. She finished as hammer throw runner-up with a mark of 58.87m and placed third in shot put at 16.34m.
Devia Brown, who has signed with the Gophers for the 2020 season after beginning her collegiate career at Central Arizona College, joined Clunis in the throws, finishing third in hammer throw (50.97m) and fifth in shot put (15.67m).
Joining Champagnie in the long jump competition were Lorean Murray, who placed seventh with a mark of 5.82m after recording career-best marks in both triple jump (13.02m, 42-08.75) and long jump (6.01m, 19-08.75) during her sophomore season, and Minnesota alumna Todea-Kay Willis, who finished fifth (6.30m) while competing for Akan Track Club. Murray also posted an eighth-place finish in triple jump (12.41m) at the meet.
Two more Gopher alums competed on the track as Alena Brooks came in third in the 800-meter run in 2:04.41 and Titania Markland placed 15th in the 400-meter dash in 52.83 seconds.
