The University of Minnesota soccer team has announced the full 2019 schedule which will showcase eight home contests, 11 road games and one exhibition match.
"We're really excited about the schedule we've put together," said head coach Stef Golan. "We've purposefully put together a non-conference mix of opponents who are going to challenge us in very different ways, which I always think is really important to prepare for Big Ten play. We have a lot of different styles within our own conference and we try to put teams on the schedule that are going to give us similar challenges early and help us be able to navigate those challenges down the line in conference play."
A stretch of four 2018 NCAA Tournament teams will highlight the Gophers non-conference season in 2019. Minnesota will match up against SEC opponents Arkansas and Ole Miss, both of whom advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Gophers will then head to Charlottesville to take on the University of Virginia before bringing their next ACC matchup home as NC State travels up to play at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. In 2018, the Wolfpack advanced to the Round of 16 where they, like the Maroon and Gold, were knocked out by UCLA whereas the Cavaliers bowed out in the same round after losing to Baylor.
Prior to the start of the regular season, Minnesota will open ELR with an exhibition game against North Dakota State. The Gophers will also welcome Marquette and South Dakota State to the Robbie prior to the Big Ten season. On the road, the team will face off against USCB and Cal State Fullerton during the non-conference season.
"We're hitting the road early," said Golan. "We have a long stretch where we go to California and then we head to Ole Miss and take on a couple SEC opponents down there. This team has performed really well on the road historically. So, putting us under some adversity that way with such a young and new group is going to tell us a lot at the front end of the season that is going to benefit us later on."Â
To begin Big Ten play, the Gophers will head east to take on Rutgers and Maryland before hosting Penn State and Ohio State in the Twin Cities the next weekend. The last time Minnesota saw the Nittany Lions in competition, the Gophers defeated Penn State in PKs to become the 2018 Big Ten Tournament champions and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"We have some heavy hitters at home," added Golan. "I think people are going to see quality soccer. They're going to see quality opponents. It gives us a chance to showcase Gopher soccer under the lights at ELR, which is going to be a lot of fun. Our first home conference weekend is Penn State/Ohio State. That's huge. We hope people come out and support us for that. You know, you never get a day off in the Big Ten and this schedule is no different."
The Maroon and Gold will next take on Michigan State at home prior to matching up against Indiana down in Bloomington. The team will then travel to Madison for this fall's Border Battle where they look for redemption after Wisconsin pulled out a win last season by scoring the game winner with just seconds left in the match.Â
In the final weekend at home, the Gophers will welcome Nebaska and Iowa. Last season, the Maroon and Gold defeated both teams by a two-goal margin, the Hawkeyes in the regular season and the Cornhuskers in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
Minnesota rounds out the regular season on the road as they head to Evanston and Champaign to take the field against Northwestern and Illinois. The Gophers defeated the then No. 12 ranked Wildcats at home at ELR in 2018.
