Take a look at the Gophers' offense for the 2019-20 season.
MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher women's hockey team returns 18 players from its 2018-19 team and adds four newcomers to make up the program's 2019-20 roster. The team is under the direction of head coach Brad Frost, who returns for his 13th season at the helm of the Maroon & Gold. Break down the Gophers' roster by position with a look at the forwards.
Who's Back?
The Gophers return over 70% of their scoring from a year ago, including seven of Minnesota's top-10 scorers from 2018-19. Junior Grace Zumwinkle (25g-16a), sophomore Taylor Heise (13g-22a), and redshirt sophomore Amy Potomak (11g-20a) lead the way after each surpassing the 30-point mark a year ago. In addition, redshirt senior Sarah Potomak returns as the program's active career scoring leader, tied for 24th in program history with 133 career points.
Who's New?
Sydney Shearen is the Gophers' lone newcomer at forward this season. Shearen joins the Gophers from White Bear Lake High School where she was a three-time conference honoree and three-time all-state honorable mention selection. As a high school senior in 2018-29, Shearen primarily played defense but recorded 25 points (14g-11a) in 25 games and led the Bears to a Minnesota Class A State Tournament berth. As a member of the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team, Shearen won gold at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship before taking home silver at the 2019 tournament.
Frost on the Gopher Forwards:
"We are again very deep at forward. We'll have four lines that are capable of playing. We're maybe not as deep numbers-wise as we were last year as our roster is a little smaller, but we expect great things from our forwards, a lot of great offensive output, in particular with our top two lines. There's six or seven players who can really find the back of the net."
Notable: Nation's Top Offensive Output
The Gophers led NCAA Division I women's hockey teams in scoring a year ago, averaging 4.10 goals per game. In WCHA games, Minnesota led the league with 95 goals in 24 conference games and averaged 3.96 goals per game against WCHA opponents.
