Senior running back set to return to lineup
University of Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck announced on Monday that running back Shannon Brooks is expected to make his 2019 debut at Purdue on Saturday.
Brooks has played in 29 career games – but in only seven since the start of the 2017 season – and has rushed 358 times for 1,882 yards and 18 touchdowns.
The fifth-year senior is set to return to the Minnesota lineup at Purdue, where he has played two times in his career. Brooks, who has never faced the Boilermakers at home, has rushed 35 times at Purdue for 292 yards.
Brooks carried the ball 17 times for 176 yards and one touchdown in a win in 2015 and then rushed 18 times for 116 yards in 2017. He added 35 yards on two kick returns in 2017 to total 151 all-purpose yards at Purdue.
When healthy, the Austell, Ga., native is one of the most dynamic running backs in the nation. The explosive Brooks has five touchdowns that have been 37 yards or longer, he has caught two touchdowns and even threw for a score at Iowa in 2015. He's the first Gopher running back to rush, pass and throw for a touchdown in his career since Duane Bennett, who played from 2007-11.
Minnesota is 12-2 when he scores a touchdown and he last found the end zone against Indiana in 2018. Brooks' lone game action in 2018 was at home against the Hoosiers and he rushed 22 times for 154 yards and one touchdown. He also caught two passes for 11 yards, but left the game with an injury early in the fourth quarter and missed the rest of the season.
Brooks played in six games in 2017 and totaled 775 all-purpose yards (369 rushing, 59 receiving and 347 kick return). He scored five touchdowns that season.
Brooks played in 22 combined games from 2015-16 and rushed 257 times for 1,359 yards and 12 touchdowns.
