Senior Patti Marshall chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior defense Patti Marshall chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann before Minnesota's exhibition game against the Minnesota Whitecaps last weekend.
Dan Hamann: These four years sure have gone by fast. I don't think you really can realize until how fast they go until you're here living in this moment.
Patti Marshall: You always hear over and over again people saying how fast it goes by. I don't think you can truly believe it or comprehend it until it happens to you.
DH: Last year you made it to the championship game but fell just a little bit short to Wisconsin. When you look back on that game in March of 2019, what do you remember about it and how does that help you get ready for this year?
PM: It was a tough loss, definitely making it all the way to the end, especially against Wisconsin, a team in our own conference, but I think that just makes us hungry for this year. Coming into this season, we have nothing to lose. We're going to go all out this season and see how it goes.
DH: As a senior, you'll be looked to for leadership this year. Talk about how the leadership is organized on this team.
PM: We have a good upperclassmen group this year. JJ is really into leadership, and it's really awesome what he does with this team. We're starting a leadership group this year, so I'm really excited and looking forward to that. It has some returning players in it, and then as the year goes on, people will step up into different roles. It'll be really exciting to see the leadership that takes place here.
DH: But still, wearing the captain 'C' is still something special. Talk about what that's like.
PM: Knowing the girls who have worn letters on their jerseys in the past here, it's really humbling to see the group of people. They're great players and people. It's really humbling to be a part of that, and I'm just really excited to be a part of the leadership group on this team this year because I think we'll do great things.
DH: There are not that many new faces this year, so the transition might be easy for you, but what are your first impressions, especially of your blue line group?
PM: There are only four new incomers this year, and honestly all of them have stepped in great to their roles. The three of them that played yesterday I thought did fantastic. Back on the blue line with Maddie joining, I played with her yesterday, and she did just as great as I thought she would. She fit in really comfortably out there, and I thought she did a really great job.
DH: Early impressions again, but Madeline can really keep the puck on her stick and knows how to handle and maneuver through traffic, doesn't she?
PM: She has great skills and great vision out on the ice. She's got a lot of talent. It'll be a good year for her.
DH: What was it like getting back into a game situation?
PM: It's just so much fun. The intensity is different than in practice. It felt good getting the legs underneath us again.
DH: You're a psychology major. I'm curious if you learn anything in your classes that you can bring into your game or bring into the locker room?
PM: Yeah, I've actually done a couple psych leadership classes, things like that, just the little things in every day life that I think you can bring into a team to make you closer and build better relationships.
DH: One of the major rule changes that we'll see this year is that there will be a regular five-on-five, five-minute overtime period, and then following that, a three-on-three, five-minute period. As a defense, how do you play that differently?
PM: Three-on-three is a way different game, way more time, space, and ice out there. It's a great opportunity to jump up in the play as well, but you have to make sure nobody is sneaking behind you. I think that's going to work in such good favor for our team. We have such great speed. I trust all of our goalies and our players, so I'm really looking forward to this rule change.
