Gophers Win Four Titles in Iowa

The Gophers kicked off this weekend's competition slate on day one at the Larry Wieczorek Invite on Friday.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Golden Gopher track & field team kicked off this weekend's competition slate with two titles and a program record on the women's side and two more event champions on the men's side on day one of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday.
Women's Highlights
Val Larson and Erin Dunning won their respective events to lead the Gopher women on day one of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. Larson posted a season-best time of 1:30.84 to win the premier 600 meters while Dunning won the premier weight throw with a mark of 18.39 meters (60-04.00 ft.) on her sixth and final throw for the victory.
Amira Young finished second overall and was the top collegiate runner in the premier section of the women's 200 meters, clocking a Minnesota program record time of 23.96 seconds. Tess Keyzers also improved her shot put mark on Minnesota's all-time list, where she ranks fourth in program history, as she posted an indoor career-best throw of 16.60 meters (54-05.50 ft.) to finish seventh in the premier section at the meet.
Men's Highlights
Michael Burke recorded his third-straight men's high jump victory to open his career with the Maroon & Gold, clearing 2.18 meters (7-01.75 ft.). The performance moved Burke into a tie for 10th in University of Minnesota program history. Ben Gucinski tied for ninth in the competition.
Meanwhile, Evan Ferlic picked up a win in the men's 3,000 meters in his first action of the 2020 indoor season. Ferlic clocked a winning time of 8:24.23 while Alex Plasencia finished third and Robert Wagner came in eighth.
