Orlando, Fla. - The University of Minnesota Spirit Squad traveled to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. over the weekend to compete in the UCA & UDA College National Championships. The event is regarded as the premier national competition for college cheerleading, dance, and mascot teams.
While the Gophers are no stranger to the competition, the cheer team entered a new division for the first time in school history, taking on the Small Coed Division. Small Coed unites All-Girl and Coed disciplines of cheerleading to one team of four males and twelve females. Minnesota executed a clean and exciting routine, allowing them to advance through semifinals. After their finals performance, Minnesota placed 9th in the nation in Division I Small Coed.

The Dance team competed in both the Division IA Jazz and Pom division. The 19-time National Champions are always one of the top contenders in both divisions and are well known for pushing the envelope with unique choreography. This year's Jazz routine, choreographed by Mackenzie Larkin Symanietz, earned the Gophers a second place trophy among the top dance programs in the nation.
It was not just the cheer and dance team competing this weekend, four-time National Champion Goldy Gopher took the stage as well, earning a fifth place finish this year.
The UCA & UDA College National Championships marks the end of the Spirit Squad's competitive season for the year, as the team continues to support men's and women's basketball as well as ice hockey in their campaigns.
