This afternoon's 70-52 loss was the 121st all-time meeting between Minnesota and Michigan State (not counting vacated games), with MSU leading the series, 64-57 (Gophers lead 33-24 in Minneapolis). Michigan State recorded its fifth-straight win versus the Gophers, as it swept the season series. Minnesota fell to 11-9 overall and 5-5 in the Big Ten, while No. 11/9 Michigan State improved to 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the conference. Richard Pitino is 2-9 versus the Spartans. Minnesota's all-time record now stands at 1,498-1,122 overall and 766-840 in the B1G (not counting vacated games). Coach Pitino's seventh-year record at Minnesota is 123-101, and his eight-year career mark is 141-115.

Coach Pitino utilized a starting lineup of senior Alihan Demir (18th start at Minnesota, 74th career start), redshirt junior Payton Willis (16th start at Minnesota, 32nd career start), redshirt sophomore Marcus Carr (20th start at Minnesota, 47th career start), sophomore Gabe Kalscheur (56th career start), and sophomore Daniel Oturu (51st career start). Minnesota fell to 8-7 this season when using that starting five.
GAME RECAP
Minnesota dug itself a hole by making just four of its first 20 field goal attempts, including just 1-of-15 from three-point range to start the game) and fell behind by as many as 13 points in the first half. But the Gophers made 5-of-10 shots to close the half, and went to the locker room trailing, 30-22. Daniel Oturu led the Gophers with nine points and four rebounds at the half, while Gabe Kalscheur added five points.
The second half was much the same, as Minnesota struggled to find an offensive rhythm all day, combining to make 16-of-57 (.281) field goals and just 5-of-28 (.179) three-pointers. Minnesota was outrebounded, 39-35, and the Spartans outscored the Gophers in the paint, 34-20. Oturu finished with a game-high 19 points to go with six rebounds, while Kalscheur had 15 points and Marcus Carr finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
OTURU LEADS ALL SCORERS
On a day when Minnesota shot just 28.1 percent, Daniel Oturu was 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-7 at the free throw line to lead all scorers with 19 points. The game was Oturu's 19th this season in double figures, and he added six rebounds in 35 minutes. In 10 Big Ten games, Oturu has six double-doubles and is averaging 21.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Over his past 13 games, he's had eight games with 20+ points. Oturu, who leads the Big Ten with 11 double-doubles this season, has recorded double-doubles in seven of his past 12 games.
CARR HAS 15TH DOUBLE-FIGURE GAME
Marcus Carr had a tough day offensively, making just 3-of-14 field goal attempts, but he managed to reach double-figures for the 15th time this season with 11 points to go with team-best totals of seven rebounds and six assists. As he has all season long, Carr logged the most minutes for the Gophers, as he was on the floor for 39 minutes. Carr has six games this season with 20+ points, and he's accomplished that feat three times in the past five games.
KALSCHEUR REACHES 600
Gabe Kalscheur scored in double figures for the second straight game (11th time this season), as he tallied 15 points to move past 600 for his career. Kalscheur connected on three of the Gophers' five three-pointers, while also grabbing four rebounds, dishing out two assists and leading the team with two steals in 36 minutes.
