1/29/2020 1:32:00 PM | Tennis
The University of Minnesota women's tennis team returns to Baseline Tennis Center this weekend with a pair of dual matches against the University of Northern Iowa and the University of North Dakota. Fresh off of a west coast win, the Gophers look to compete in their first home series of the season, marking the beginning of an eight-game home streak at Baseline.
"We are looking forward to competing at home this weekend and for the next few weeks," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "It will be nice to play our first matches this spring season at home at Baseline this weekend."
ABOUT THE GOPHERS
After two weekends on the road, the Gophers will return to Baseline with a 2-2 record on the season. Last weekend, they split with a 4-0 loss against No.4 UCLA and turned around to defeat Gonzaga 4-0. Minnesota saw big wins from seniors Cammy Frei and Tina Kreinis, as well as newcomers Dalila Said and Ekin Ercetin. The quad of players picked off the win from the Bulldogs in singles play to end the match early.
THE NEWCOMER LEADS THE WAY
Redshirt freshman Dalila Said has made a name for herself in her first season wearing Maroon and Gold. Overall, Said is 4-2 on the 2020 regular season, and has generated wins against Montana, Utah, and Gonzaga. While in Los Angeles, Said left an unfinished match while leading 3-2 against Abi Atlick of UCLA.
SENIOR STANDOUT
Senior Tina Kreinis has always held her own while at Minnesota. In the No. 1 singles spot, Kreinis faced off against UCLA's 14th-ranked Elysia Bolton and ended it unfinished with a tied score of 5-5. While playing Gonzaga, Kreinis came back from a 2-5 deficit in the first game to defeat Cate Broerman 7-5, 6-3. Her win improved Minnesota's record to 2-2.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS
In their last four regular season meetings with the Gophers (2019, 2018, 2014, 2013), the Panthers have yet to accumulate a win against the Maroon and Gold. Currently 0-2 overall, Northern Iowa lost in tight matches with Omaha and Iowa State. Freshman Kim Zizek and junior Madeline Doherty lead the team with two wins on the season.
ABOUT THE FIGHTING HAWKS
North Dakota has yet to earn a win against the Maroon and Gold. In their last three regular season meetings (2016, 2015, 2014), Minnesota has swept them clean 7-0. North Dakota is 0-2 on the 2020 season, with losses coming from Missouri State and Creighton. Standout player Allie Ochoterena has one win in her last two duals, but held a perfect record in the No. 1 and 3 doubles spots last season.
