Senior receives befitting honor as legacy continues to grow

Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey declared Jan. 4, 2020, as Tyler Johnson Day. The mayor presented a framed proclamation to the Gopher star at North High School this afternoon.

Johnson, who is from North Minneapolis, recently completed his Minnesota career with a 12-catch, 204 yard and two touchdown performance in a 31-24 win against Auburn in the Outback Bowl.

Johnson set Minnesota single season records in receptions (86) receiving yards (1,318) and touchdown receptions (13) this year, as he helped lead Minnesota to 11 wins for the first time since 1904.

Johnson, who elected to come back to school for his senior year to earn his degree, leaves Minnesota as the most decorated receiver in school history. He ranks first in career receiving yards (3,305) and touchdowns (33) and is second in receptions (213).

His 16 career 100-yard games is five more than Eric Decker and Tutu Atwell and he tied another school record when he ended his career with a touchdown in seven straight games. Johnson is the only Minnesota receiver to record two seasons with 1,000 yards and ranks first (1,318 yards in 2019) and third (1,169 yards in 2018) in season receiving yards.
