MINNEAPOLIS -- Several Gopher women's hockey alums are among the professional women's hockey players spending the 2019-20 season participating in the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association (PWHPA).
The PWHPA kicked off its Dream Gap Tour this fall, bringing some of the world's best women's hockey players together to showcase their talent and bring awareness to the pay disparities between men's and women's professional sports. The fall leg of the tour included stops in Toronto, Ontario; Hudson, N.H.; and Chicago, Ill., where the league organized four-team tournaments for the professional athletes to scrimmage each other along with host community events for young hockey players to meet the athletes. Two upcoming stops on the Dream Gap Tour are set for Toronto, Ontario and Philadelphia, Pa.
Eight Gopher women's hockey alums have suited up to play in the PWHPA's showcases, including Megan Bozek, Gigi Marvin, Lee Stecklein, Dani Cameranesi, Hannah Brandt, Kelly Pannek, Amanda Kessel, and Noora Raty.
Secret Women's Hockey Showcase, Toronto, Ontario (Jan. 11-12)
The weekend kicks off with an event called Closing the Gap presented by the NHLPA at Labatt Breweries in Toronto on Friday. The PWHPA Skills Competition presented by Adidas Hockey is on Saturday and includes Gophers Lee Stecklein and Hannah Brandt. Six games are set for Saturday and Sunday with six Gopher alums set to participate: Gigi Marvin and Amanda Kessel on Team Kessel and Brandt, Stecklein, Kelly Pannek, and Dani Cameranesi playing on Team Coyne.
PWHPA Philadelphia Showcase, Philadelphia, Pa. (Feb. 29-March 1)
The Dream Gap Tour visits Philadelphia later this winter with four games scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29 and Sunday, March 1 at the Virtua Flyers Skate Zone at Voorhees, , home of the Philadelphia Flyers training facility. The goal of the Philadelphia Women's Hockey Showcase is to support the PWHPA's mission to promote, and advance a single, viable professional women's ice hockey league in North America. The Philadelphia Women's Hockey Showcase is part of the Dream Gap Tour and benefits the PWHPA, Flyers Charities and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation. Additional details and team rosters will be announced at a later date.
The PWHPA is planning additional Dream Gap Tour events as the 2019-20 season continues. For the latest PWHPA news and initiatives, follow the squad at @PWHPA on Twitter.
