MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota men's basketball coach Richard Pitino was honored Thursday night as the Spirit of Hope Community Honoree at the Minnesota Made Extravaganza, a gala held virtually to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Pitino was recognized for the work he has done over the past five years to raise money for the Minneapolis Hope Lodge, a facility for cancer patients and their caregivers, through his annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Reception. According to the ACS, the reception has helped raise over $500,000 dollars over the last five years. Pitino and the men's basketball program have also donated their time as volunteers at the Hope Lodge, cooking dinner and providing entertainment and encouragement to the guests.
"Thank you so much for the Spirit of Hope Award," Pitino said during the gala. "It means a lot to me. I'm very thankful and fortunate… the work that we've all been able to do together is making a difference and it's proving to be making a difference. I'm grateful to be a part of it."
"We've done some unbelievable work with the Hope Lodge," he continued. "I love to be able to bring my team there every single year and introduce them to all the brave men and women in their fight against cancer to show what the Hope Lodge has done and what they continue to do.
"We are so lucky to have the Hope Lodge right here on campus at the University of Minnesota," Pitino said. "We are so lucky to be a part of a place that is making lives better, serving people, and we want to continue to be a small part of that."
