First time three Gophers are honored in two years since 2004-05
University of Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim was named Third Team All-America by the Associated Press earlier this week. He is the third Gopher to be named an All-American in the last two years, joining Antoine Winfield Jr. and Rashod Bateman who were both honored in 2019. Winfield was named a unanimous All-American, while Bateman was placed on the Third Team by the Associate Press.Â
The last time Minnesota had three All-Americans during a two-year span was 2004-05 when Greg Eslinger (2004), Mark Setterstrom (2004, 2005) and Laurence Maroney (2005) were honored. Â Â
Ibrahim, who was previously named Big Ten Running Back of the Year and All-Big Ten First Team, led the conference in the following categories: rushing attempts (201), rushing yards (1,076), rushing yards per game (153.7), rushing touchdowns (15), scoring (90), points per game (12.9) and all-purpose yards per game (168.4).
Ibrahim, who played in all of Minnesota's seven games, set a school record with a rushing average of 153.7 yards per game and tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns in a one game (did so at Maryland and at Illinois).Â
In seven games, Ibrahim rushed 201 times (25th most in school single-season history) for 1,076 yards (23rd most in school single season-history) and 15 touchdowns (most ever for a junior at Minnesota and ranks fourth in school-single season history).Â
In 2019, Winfield was named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year, All-Big Ten First Team and was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award. He lead Minnesota with 83 tackles, which included 58 solo stops. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks to go along with seven interceptions and two forced fumbles.Â
In 2019, Bateman was named the Big Ten Receiver of the Year and was one of 12 finalists for the Biletnikoff Award. He set sophomore program records with 1,219 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. Bateman was the first Minnesota receiver ever to be named an All-American.Â
