Gophers in the NWHL: Feb. 14

Seven Gopher alums are spending the 2019-20 season playing for the Minnesota Whitecaps in the NWHL.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Seven University of Minnesota women's hockey alumnae are playing for the NWHL's Minnesota Whitecaps this season in Chelsey Brodt Rosenthal, Winny Brodt Brown, Sydney Baldwin, Kelsey Cline, Meghan Lorence, Nicole Schammel, and Amanda Leveille.
For the season, Schammel (10g-14a) ranks third on the team with 24 points in 20 games played. Baldwin (8g-10a) is fifth on the team with 18 points as well. Lorence (8g-7a), Brodt Brown (5a), Cline (3a), and Brodt Rosenthal (2a) have also logged points. Leveille is 13-5-0 in 20 games played with a .932 save percentage and a 2.13 goals against average.
Schammel, Lorence, and Leveille took part in the 2020 NWHL All-Star Weekend last week. Lorence represented Team Dempsey in the fastest skater competition, and Leveille represented Team Packer in the fastest goalie challenge. Schammel was part of Team Dempsey's winning relay race team as well. In the NWHL All-Star game, Schammel (1g) and Lorence helped Team Dempsey to a 5-2 win over Leveille and Team Packer in the four-on-four competition.
In addition, Leveille was named the NWHL's Player of the Month for January after she started all eight games for the Whitecaps during the month and led the squad to a 6-2-0 record.
Whitecaps at Riveters (Jan. 4-5)
The Whitecaps split with the Riveters, earning a 2-0 win before falling 3-1. Leveille picked up a 34-save shutout and Baldwin scored the insurance goal in game one, and Lorence scored the Whitecaps' lone goal in game two.
Whitecaps vs. Beauts (Jan. 11-12)
Minnesota earned a sweep over the Beauts with 8-2 and 7-1 wins. In the team's game one win, Schammel (1g-2a), Baldwin (1g), Lorence (2a), Brodt Rosenthal (1a), and Brodt Brown (1a) picked up points while Leveille made 27 saves on 29 shots faced. In game two, Baldwin (1g-2a), Schammel (1g-1a), Lorence (1g), and Brodt Brown (1a) tallied points, and Leveille again earned the win in net with 24 saves on 25 shots faced in two periods of play.
Whitecaps vs. Whale (Jan. 18-19)
The Whitecaps extended their winning streak with a sweep over the Connecticut Whale with 6-1 and 7-0 wins. Schammel (1g-3a), Baldwin (2a), Lorence (2a), and Cline (1a) recorded points against the Whale. Leveille combined for 65 saves on 66 shots faced, including a 34-save shutout in game two.
Whitecaps vs. Pride (Jan. 25-26)
Most recently, the Whitecaps recorded a series split with the Boston Pride. The Whitecaps won 4-3 in game one before seeing a five-game winning streak snapped with a 4-2 loss in game two. Lorence (1g) and Schammel (1a) made their way onto the scoresheet against the Pride, and Leveille made 36 saves on 39 shots in game one and followed up with 22 saves on 25 shots faced in the team's game-two win.
The Whitecaps have two regular-season series remaining as they travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for a series with the Beauts (Feb. 22-23) before closing out the regular season against the Connecticut Whale (Feb. 29-March 1).
