Seven Gophers Named to U.S. Worlds Roster

Grace Zumwinkle joins six Minnesota alumnae among those named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster.
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota junior Grace Zumwinkle joins six Golden Gopher alumnae among those named to the U.S. Women's National Team that will compete in the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship, March 31-April 10 in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia, USA Hockey announced Tuesday.
Zumwinkle joins Hannah Brandt, Megan Bozek, Dani Cameranesi, Amanda Kessel, Kelly Pannek, and Lee Stecklein to make up the players with Minnesota ties set to represent the Red, White, and Blue at this year's world championship.
Along with the seven athletes, three Minnesota staff members are among those supporting the U.S. Women's National Team this spring. Gophers associate head coach Joel Johnson will serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women's National Team while Minnesota equipment manager Brent Proulx and Minnesota strength and conditioning coach Cal Dietz are also on staff for the U.S. team.
The U.S. will conduct a training camp at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine, from March 24-27 in preparation for the 2020 IIHF Women's World Championship.
At the 2020 IIHF Women's World Championship, the U.S. Women's National Team will compete in Group A in Halifax alongside Canada, Finland, Russia and Switzerland. Group B will include the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary and Japan. Competition begins on Tuesday, March 31 and runs through Friday, April 10, and all games will be broadcast live in the U.S. on NHL Network.
The U.S. has won the last five IIHF Women's World Championships and captured the top prize a total of nine times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), including eight of the last nine tournaments. Team USA is 77-5-6-8-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) in 97 career games and has outscored opponents 634-139.
