Six Gophers Earn All-WCHA Accolades

Sydney Scobee leads Minnesota as an All-WCHA First Team selection.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Six Golden Gophers have been honored by the WCHA as the league announced its 2019-20 All-WCHA Teams, presented by Sterling Trophy, on Thursday.

Sydney Scobee, First Team 
A right-handed goaltender, senior Sydney Scobee has played nearly every minute in net for the Gophers this season, ranked second in the nation at 96.33% of total minutes played. The Minnetrista, Minn., native led the WCHA with a 1.63 goals against average, .933 save percentage, 17 wins, and six shutouts in 24 league games. For the year, she ranks sixth in the nation with a 1.56 goals against average and comes in 10th in the country with a .934 save percentage. Scobee has earned three WCHA Goaltender of the Week awards and two WCHA Goaltender of the Month awards this season.

Emily Brown, Second Team
Assistant captain Emily Brown, a left-handed defense from Blaine, Minn., has earned her second All-WCHA Second Team award of her career after receiving the same distinction a year ago. Brown recorded 16 points (3g-13a) in 24 conference games while posting a +23 plus/minus in league play as a junior this season. She and the rest of the Gopher defense allowed just 40 goals in 24 conference games for a WCHA-best 1.67 goals against average in league play. Brown is also a critical piece of Minnesota's penalty kill, which ranks second in the nation at 92.9 percent (78-of-84). She earned WCHA Defense of the Week honors on Oct. 21.

Grace Zumwinkle, Second Team
Junior Grace Zumwinkle is a right-handed forward from Excelsior, Minn. She has earned her third All-WCHA nod of her career after being an All-WCHA First Team selection as a freshman and sophomore. Zumwinkle is tied for the team scoring lead with 41 points; she has a team-best 22 goals this season as well. In 24 conference games, Zumwinkle ranked sixth with 31 points. Her 16 goals in league games were third among WCHA players. Zumwinkle led the league with four game-winning goals, 129 shots on goal, and +25 plus/minus in 24 WCHA games. This season, she picked up back-to-back WCHA Forward of the Week honors on Oct. 29 and Nov. 5.

Sarah Potomak, Third Team
A left-handed forward from Aldergrove, British Columbia, Sarah Potomak has earned her third All-WCHA award of her career after earning a place on both the All-WCHA Third Team and All-WCHA Rookie Team in 2015-16 and landing on the All-WCHA Second Team in 2016-17. This season, the redshirt senior is tied for the team scoring lead with 41 points; her 23 assists lead the Gophers. In 24 conference games this season, Potomak ranked ninth among WCHA players with 27 points (11g-16a). She was named the WCHA Forward of the Month for November 2019 and picked up WCHA Forward of the Week honors on Jan. 7 this season. Potomak leads Minnesota with 15 multi-point games this season.

Taylor Heise, Third Team
A WCHA All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, sophomore forward Taylor Heise has earned All-WCHA Third Team honors this season. She recorded 29 points (14g-15a) in 24 WCHA games, good for seventh in scoring among all WCHA players in conference action. For the season, Heise, a Lake City, Minn., native, is third on the team in scoring with a career-high 39 points (17g-22a). She has nine multi-point games and recorded her 50th career point earlier this season.

Madeline Wethington, Rookie Team
A left-handed defense from Edina, Minn., freshman Madeline Wethington has earned WCHA All-Rookie Team honors after beginning her collegiate career by being named the WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year. Wethington led WCHA rookies with 29 blocked shots and recorded nine points (3g-6a) in 24 conference games to tie for fifth in scoring among WCHA rookies in league play. She and the rest of the Gopher defense allowed just 40 goals in 24 conference games for a WCHA-best 1.67 goals against average in league play as well. She earned two WCHA Rookie of the Week awards this season. 

In addition, 13 Gophers are among the student-athletes honored as part of the 2019-20 WCHA All-Academic Team, comprised of 112 student-athletes. To qualify for the WCHA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed one year of eligibility at their present institution, prior to the current academic year and have a GPA of at least 3.0 for the previous two semesters or three quarters.
