Gophers Set for Big Ten Opener

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team will be back at Baseline Tennis Center this weekend to open up Big Ten play against the University of Iowa and will turn around to battle Marquette. Coming off of a weekend sweep, Minnesota looks to continue their home court dominance this weekend.
"This weekend will be a test for us with both Iowa and Marquette coming to Baseline," said head coach Catrina Thompson. "We are looking forward to competing at home again and playing in front of our home crowd."
ABOUT THE GOPHERS
Minnesota heads into this weekend's duals with a three game win streak, two of which came at home over Northern Iowa and North Dakota last weekend. Every Golden Gopher contributed to an undefeated home record of 18 wins and zero losses. Senior Cammy Frei and redshirt freshman Dalila Said both have clean singles records. Said is 5-0 clinching wins from the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions, while Frei is 4-0 with wins coming from the No. 4 and 5 spots.
A WEEKEND OF FIRSTS
Sophomore Bella Lambert and freshman Lucia de Santa Ana picked up their first doubles and singles wins on the year, this improves their combined records to 2-0. Lambert competed against Northern Iowa and de Santa Ana against North Dakota. Both players were paired with teammate Juliet Zhang during doubles play.
ABOUT THE HAWKEYES
In their last nine regular season meetings with Iowa, the Gophers lead the series 7-2. Currently 1-3 on the season (0-0 Big Ten), the Hawkeyes lone victory came against Southern Alabama on Jan.18, 2020. Senior Elise Van Huevelen Treadwell leads the Hawkeyes with a 4-1 record. In the No. 1 singles position, she successfully picked off wins against Texas Tech, Florida International and Southern Alabama.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Marquette has yet to clinch a win over the Golden Gophers. In their last eight meetings (2001, 2002, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018) Minnesota has gone undefeated to lead the series 8-0. Fleur Eggink, a senior in the No. 1 doubles and singles position, has a combined record of 6-2. She has wins over UIC, Greenbay, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
