Frei Earns Big Ten Athlete of the Week Accolades

For the first time in her career at Minnesota, senior Cammy Frei has earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week accolades.
The last University of Minnesota women's tennis player selected for the honor was Caroline Ryba during the week of April 10, 2018. Two years ago, Ryba claimed a 4-0 weekend record and was a prominent factor to clinch a 4-3 win over a then ranked No. 30 Ohio State.
The Gophers' elite performance so far this season helped lead the way for Frei to earn the honors. Having claimed major wins over Memphis, Missouri and No. 21 Wisconsin, Frei played a crucial role in those victories in both the doubles and singles positions to escalate the Maroon and Gold to their 12-3 record.
Last weekend, Frei notched a 3-0 shake as the Gophers swept Rutgers (7-0) and defeated Wisconsin (4-3). Her shining moment came during singles play against the Badgers when she defeated Miruna Tudor in the No. 5 singles spot 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. The match delivered Minnesota to a 4-3 victory which continued their undefeated home record and earned them a spot on the ITA rankings this week at No. 41.
"I'm happy to be picked this week," said Frei. "It feels great to know the work we are putting in is paying off. I hope the team can continue to perform well for the rest of the season."
The Gophers will be back in action on March 22 at 11:00a.m., CT when they face Maryland on the road. The Maroon & Gold will return to Baseline the weekend of March 27 with match ups against Penn State and No. 5 Ohio State. Be sure to keep up with Minnesota on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!
