Gophers Unite During Replay of Win Against Penn State
3/29/2020 11:20:00 AM | Football
Thousands of fans #StayHomeMN and watch Gophers beat Nittany Lions
The game was originally played on Nov. 9, 2019, and was the first contest in Minneapolis that featured two Top 15 teams since the No. 5 Gophers beat No. 1 Michigan State 13-0 in 1961.
Three of the top four trending topics on Twitter when the replay ended focused on the Gophers. Fans were tweeting #skiumah, #GoGophers and #rowtheboat, as they watched Minnesota's first home win against a Top 5 team since it beat No. 1 Michigan 16-0 in 1977. The win was also Minnesota's first victory against a Top 5 five team since it beat No. 2 Penn State on the road in 1999.
Tanner Morgan threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns to direct a dismantling of Penn State's staunch defense and Jordan Howden picked off Sean Clifford in the end zone with 1:01 left in the game to seal the win.
The win pushed Minnesota to 9-0 for the first time since 1904 and made the Gophers 6-0 in Big Ten play for the first time since 1961.
The Gophers ended the season 11-2 and ranked No. 10 in the final AP poll after an Outback Bowl victory against No. 9 Auburn on Jan. 1, 2020.
