Powell scores 14, Brunson adds 11 in defeat
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Freshman Jasmine Powell scored 14 points and senior Jasmine Brunson added 11, but 11th-seeded Minnesota (16-15) fell to No. 6 Ohio State (19-11) Thursday, 77-56, in the second round of the 2020 Big Ten Tournament. The game was the fourth and final contest of the day at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and ended at 9:40 p.m. CT.
Ohio State jumped out to a 13-3 lead early and then saw that advantage swell to 23-6 late in the first quarter. Minnesota, behind seven points from Powell and six from Brunson, outscored the Buckeyes 22-16 in the second quarter to trail by 39-33 at the half.
Minnesota's surge continued in the third quarter and into the fourth, as the Gophers cut the deficit to 54-50 after Gadiva Hubbard made two free throws with 9:48 left in the game. Four points was as close as the Maroon and Gold would get though, as Ohio State pulled away in the final frame and outscored the Gophers 23-6 the rest of the way to advance to face Iowa in the tournament quarterfinals.
"I felt really good going into half," said head coach Lindsay Whalen. "Then we struggled in the third to score, but our defense was great. Then the end of the third we started to feel really good on offense. Then unfortunately the fourth, the floodgates opened a little bit."
Minnesota poured in nine 3-pointers compared to Ohio State's six and both teams had 45 rebounds (15 offensive for both). However, the difference in the game was the work in the paint, as Ohio State outscored Minnesota 46-16 in that area and also had 20 fastbreak points to six for the Gophers.
Senior Taiye Bello scored four points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Minnesota. She now has 1,011 rebounds in her career and is the fifth Gopher to reach 1,000 career rebounds. Bello is also just 29 points away from reaching 1,000 points in her career.
Freshman center Klarke Sconiers recorded new career highs in blocks (3) and rebounds (7) for the Gophers.
The loss ends Minnesota's Big Ten Tournament run and comes on the heels of an 86-65 opening-round win against Penn State. Minnesota was 11-of-23 from 3-point range versus Penn State and set a team record with the most 3's made at the Big Ten Tournament. The Gophers also set a program record at the tournament with 20 assists against Penn State.
