Coughlin, Renner and Herbers recognized by Hampshire Honor Society
Three members of the Gopher football team have been announced as members of the National Football Foundation's (NFF) 2020 Hampshire Honor Society. Carter Coughlin, Jacob Herbers and Sam Renner received the recognition.
To qualify for the Hampshire Honor Society, a student-athlete must be a senior in his final year of eligibility, achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better and meet the NCAA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.
Minnesota is just one of 29 colleges and universities that have had at least one player in all 14 years of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society (2007-19). It is joined by Brigham Young, Brown, Bucknell, Colorado, Columbia, Dayton, Huntingdon (AL), Iowa, Johns Hopkins (MD), Kentucky, Lafayette, Minnesota Duluth, Montana, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Penn State, Redlands (CA), Saint John's (MN), SMU, South Dakota State, Wartburg (IA), Washington Univ. in St. Louis (MO), Wayne State (MI), West Virginia, Wingate (NC), Yale and Youngstown State in this elite club.
Coughlin majored in Business & Marketing Education and left Minnesota as one of the school's most dominate pass rushers. He finished third all-time in sacks with 22.5 and fourth all-time in tackles for loss with 40. Coughlin was named Academic All-Big Ten three times and was recognized as All-Big Ten Second Team performer twice.
Herbers, who has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, punted 94 times in his career and averaged 39.6 yards. He placed 37 of his punts inside the 20 and only two of them went into the end zone for touchbacks. He was also named Academic All-Big Ten four times and was honored as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2018 and 2019.
Renner graduated with a degree in Applied Economics and made 56 career tackles in 37 games. He also had nine tackles for loss and five sacks. Renner was named Academic All-Big Ten three times and was a CoSida all-American Sec team member in 2019.
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society recognized 1,432 players from 364 schools.
