Minnesota sets school modern-era NFL Draft record with five selections

The New York Giants selected two Minnesota defensive players – Carter Coughlin and Chris Williamson – in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, as the Gophers set a modern era draft record with five selections. Minnesota last had five players taken in the 1990 draft, but that year featured 12 rounds. 

Coughlin was taken with the 218th overall pick, while Williamson was selected at No. 247.  

Coughlin was named All-Big Ten Second Team in 2018 and 2019 and finished his career with 159 tackles. He is third all-time in school history with 22.5 career sacks and is fourth in school history with 40 tackles for loss. He also forced seven fumbles and recovered one in his career.  

Coughlin started all 13 games last season and recorded 49 tackles, including a team leading 9.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks. He forced two fumbles and recovered one fumbles as well. 

Williamson transferred to Minnesota from Florida and played two years for the Gophers after sitting out the 2017 season. He played in 24 career games and made 91 tackles (58 solo), which included 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Williamson added two interceptions, broke up nine more and forced once fumble as a Gopher.
