Alex Woken and Patti Marshall were chosen in the first two rounds of the 2020 NWHL Draft.

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota seniors Alex Woken and Patti Marshall were among the players selected in the first two rounds of the 2020 National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) Draft on Tuesday night.

Woken was selected by the Minnesota Whitecaps as the team's first pick and the fifth overall pick of the draft. The Whitecaps also drafted Marshall, picking her up in the second round as the 11th overall pick.

A right-handed forward from Fargo, N.D., Woken had a career-best season as a senior as she reached career-highs for points (32), goals (16), and assists (16) and recorded her 50th career point. One of the Gophers' most consistent players during the 2019-20 season, Woken described her role on the team as being a steady player who always works as hard as she can. She is intense on the puck and makes things difficult for opponents. Her teammates voted her an assistant captain as a senior, and Woken closed out her Gopher career as a three-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete and WCHA All-Academic honoree while completing her degree in Neuroscience.

"Alex is a warrior," head coach Brad Frost said. "When it comes to competing, there is no one better. She puts a tremendous amount of energy on the puck through her speed and aggressiveness. Alex is a great teammate and leader as well."

Marshall, a right-handed defense from Thief River Falls, Minn., served as Minnesota's team captain for the 2019-20 season and logged 10 points (1g-9a) in 34 games played. A steady presence at the Gophers' blue line over the past four years, Marshall's quiet leadership and discipline set a daily example for the rest of the team. She ranked third on the team with 44 blocked shots in 2019-20 and was recognized as an All-WCHA Third Team honoree as a junior in 2018-19. Marshall was a three-time WCHA All-Academic honoree and will graduate with her degree in Psychology.

"Patti is the model of consistency," Frost said. "She plays both ends of the rink extremely well and has had great experience at every level. Patti is an excellent leader and can be relied on in every situation."

Woken and Marshall join Nicole Schammel, Kelly Pannek, Lee Stecklein, Dani Cameranesi, Hannah Brandt, Amanda Leveille, Milica McMillen, and Maryanne Menefee to make up Minnesota's 10 all-time NWHL draft picks. Brandt was the number two overall pick in 2015 and Stecklein was also selected second overall in 2016.
