The University of Minnesota volleyball's 2020 recruiting class has been ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to VolleyballMag.com. The news organization announced its rankings today, May 1, 2020.
It marks the first time head coach Hugh McCutcheon has recruited the nation's top class and second time in school history. It also marks Minnesota's first-ever top ranking by VolleyballMag.com since the organization moved to the digital version five seasons ago. VolleyballMag.com ranked Minnesota in the top four in 2017, its highest ranking prior to this year. Minnesota also held a No. 1 recruiting class ranking in 2009 by Prepvolleyball.com.
Minnesota's top recruiting class includes four freshmen and a graduate transfer. The Golden Gophers' class includes Cami Appiani (5-8 defensive specialist from San Diego, Calif.), Taylor Landfair (6-4 outsider hitter from Plainfield, Ill.), Melani Shaffmaster (6-3 setter from New Castle, Ind.) and Jenna Wenaas (6-1 outside hitter from Frisco, Texas) in November. The Golden Gophers recently added grad transfer Katie Myers (6-2 middle blocker from Westerville, Ohio) to strengthen their roster.
Earlier this year, Landfair was ranked VolleyballMag.com's No. 1 recruit, while Wenaas was named the fifth-ranked recruit and Shaffmaster as the sixth. Both Landfair and Shaffmaster both enrolled at the University of Minnesota this past January. Wenaas, Appiani and Myers are scheduled to join in the fall.
This recruiting class bolsters an already potent lineup as the Golden Gophers return 11 letterwinners from the 2019 Final Four team, including All-Americans Regan Pittman and Stephanie Samedy and All-Big Ten selection CC McGraw. Last year, the Gophers finished with a 27-6 overall record and 17-3 in the Big Ten, which tied for second in the league standings.
