Winfield named male athlete of the year, while Morgan snags breakthrough athlete of the year

The University of Minnesota athletic department hosted the 14th-annual Golden Goldys awards ceremony last night and the football team collected multiple honors. The yearly event celebrates the athletic and academic success of the department and was held virtually this year.

Football was named the men's team of the year after finishing the season with an 11-2 record and final ranking of No. 10 in the AP poll. Head coach P.J. Fleck was honored as coach of the year after guiding Minnesota to 11 wins for the first time since 1904.

Antoine Winfield Jr., and Tanner Morgan collected individual awards as well. Winfield was named male athlete of the year after being named the program's seventh unanimous All-American last season. Morgan garnered the Goldy for male breakthrough athlete of the year after setting 11 single-season passing records last season.

Carter Coughlin was the male recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, which is presented annually to a top student-athlete at each conference institution.

Sam Renner received the Lindahl Academic Center Outstanding Achievement Award, which is presented to a student-athlete who had success in the classroom and in athletics. Jacob Herbers was recognized as receiving the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.
